Story Picture

Pluto is associated with the underworld, darkness, distance, and smallness because it is so far from the Sun and so difficult to see. It was once called the ninth planet and is now called a dwarf planet, so adults often talk about it as if it lost something.
But the deeper meaning of Pluto is not loss. Pluto is the dignity of the small and hidden thing. Children understand this immediately. A tiny pebble still matters. A faraway light still has a name. Pluto teaches that small does not mean forgotten, and far away does not mean unloved.
